In a major step towards strengthening the national disaster response capacity, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), in collaboration with UK MED and the UK Emergency Medical Team (UK EMT), conducted the country’s first full-scale emergency medical field exercise under the theme “From Resilient Public Health Disaster Management to a Complete Center of Excellence.”
“This exercise is a critical milestone in our journey to build a world-class emergency response system,” said Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health.
The UK government has fully supported the Type 1 Fixed EMT (FSE) in line with the World Health Organization’s standards; the program not only provided resources but also knowledge transfer. “This training program is a demonstration of our partnership with Ethiopia in building a strong health system,” said Darren Welch, the British Ambassador to Ethiopia.
The support and training program has taken our country’s emergency response to the next level, said Dr. Mesay Hailu, Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute.
The event was attended by representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health, regional health offices, international agencies, and the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A panel discussion was held at the forum, and a memorandum of understanding was signed to facilitate future collaboration.
