The Chinese government has donated 321,000 doses of cholera vaccine to Ethiopia.
At the handover ceremony, the Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, thanked the Chinese people and government for their support, saying that this support demonstrates the strong partnership between the two countries. The Minister, who requested that the support be continued, expressed her belief that the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the health sector will continue to be strengthened.
The Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, Cheng Hai, recalled the long-standing cooperation between the two countries in the health sector; "Ethiopia and China have always worked closely together". The ambassador, who called for the effective use of these vaccines, also confirmed his commitment to continued cooperation with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health."
Dr. Abdulkadir Gelgelo, Director General of the Ethiopian Pharamceuticals Supplies Service, welcomed the donation, noting its critical role in addressing Ethiopia's public health challenges. "This support will greatly benefit communities in remote areas and strengthen our efforts to combat cholera," the director said.
Dr. Mesay Hailu, Director General of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, said the donation comes at a crucial time when Ethiopia is working to strengthen its disease surveillance and response capacity. The vaccines are expected to play a significant role in preventing cholera outbreaks and protecting public health across the country.
